While these drugs were first approved to treat diabetes, and then obesity, some of them have now been approved to https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/well/live/wegovy-ozempic-heart-risk.html and to treat https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/21/well/sleep-apnea-weight-loss-drug.html https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/18/well/fda-approves-wegovy-mash-liver-disease-fibrosis.html and https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/well/ozempic-kidney-disease.html. At least some of these benefits stem from weight loss itself. But researchers increasingly believe the drugs provide benefits that are https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/22/well/wegovy-cardiovascular-benefits-weight-loss-study.html. A leading theory is that these drugs tamp down high levels of inflammation, which is tied to https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/19/well/inflammation-health.html Scientists are also studying the potential for these drugs to treat https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/20/well/live/ozempic-weight-loss-drugs-diseases.html, including https://longcovid.scripps.edu/? and substance use disorders. Emerging evidence has suggested that people on these drugs https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/well/ozempic-alcohol-use.html https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2849345, and are less likely to develop https://www.bmj.com/content/392/bmj-2025-086886, although scientists want more, and larger, trials before drawing conclusions. 不反弹/不容易反弹 #p-8366665-you-regain-weight-if-you-stop-taking-them-but-not-necessarily-all-of-it-2You regain weight if you stop taking them — but not necessarily all of it. In clinical trials of injectable drugs currently on the market, people lost around 15 to 20 percent of their body weight, on average, after about 72 weeks. Some real-world studies back up those numbers, but other research suggests people tend to lose less weight. (The average weight loss in some real-world trials can range between about 8 and 17 percent, depending on the drug and the study.) The discrepancy between these numbers and the data from clinical trials is at least partly because many people stop taking the drugs, sometimes because of side effects or costs. Many people who stop taking these drugs will regain https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13043475/ of the weight they’ve lost, but some people have been able to sustain weight loss. One analysis of https://www.epicresearch.org/articles/two-years-after-stopping-glp-1s-most-patients-sustain-at-least-some-weight-loss found that over half of those who took semaglutide — the substance in Wegovy — or tirzepatide — the compound in Zepbound — kept at least some weight off or even lost additional weight two years after stopping. Hamlet Gasoyan, who studies these drugs at the Center for Value-Based Care Research at the Cleveland Clinic, said patients going off the drugs often turn to other methods to keep the weight off. Those can include intense exercise regimens, bariatric surgery or other medications, whether those are older weight loss drugs or cheaper https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/health/obesity-drugs-fda-compounding-wegovy-zepbound.html of new ones. 小骂大帮忙 #p-8366665-they-dont-work-equally-well-for-everyone-3They don’t work equally well for everyone. We now know that about one in 10 people on the drugs are what scientists call https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/12/well/weight-loss-drugs-response-wegovy-zepbound.html” who lose less than 5 percent of their body weight. And a small portion of people who take weight-loss drugs are “super-responders” who lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time. (It isn’t clear how common super-responders are.) Scientists think that genetics, as well as how much pleasure people naturally derive from eating, may play a role in these differing responses. 强调副作用少,罕见 #p-8366665-they-can-have-unexpected-downsides-ozempic-breath-anyone-4They can have unexpected downsides. (Ozempic breath, anyone?) Many people on these medications experience side effects that have been reported in clinical trials: nausea, fatigue and digestive issues like vomiting and diarrhea. But as more people have taken the drugs, all sorts of other, less common concerns have cropped up. Some of these, like “Ozempic breath” (caused, in part, by dehydration from patients with dampened appetites drinking less) or “https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/style/ozempic-weight-loss-drugs-aging.html” (when losing fat leaves you looking hollowed out) have become topics of conversation on social media. Dr. Scott Hagan, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington who studies obesity, has had patients complain that their hair is falling out. (It’s possible that this is a result of losing a large amount of weight, quickly; people with anorexia also often lose some hair.) Some of the issues that have emerged are more serious. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaophthalmology/fullarticle/2820255 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaophthalmology/fullarticle/2830475 studies have tied the use of these medications with a slightly increased risk of developing a very rare eye condition, though it isn’t clear yet whether GLP-1s directly cause that condition. Doctors have also seen the drugs dial down appetite so extremely that some patients develop https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/21/well/eat/ozempic-side-effects-malnutrition.html. And the drugs have also been linked with a slight increase in risk for pancreatitis, though that remains extremely rare. Patients also frequently https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/08/well/live/ozempic-muscle-loss-exercise.html on the medications. Many young, healthy patients have been able to recover muscle, or preserve it in the first place, by strength training and eating plenty of protein, doctors said. But they have seen older adults become more frail on these medications, making them more prone to falls. 改善性生活能力 #p-8366665-they-affect-more-than-just-your-body-5They affect more than just your body. As the drugs have become more popular, more anecdotes have emerged about the subtle ways they affect people’s personal lives and mental health. For example, many people say the drugs have changed their https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/magazine/weight-loss-side-effects-sex-ozempic.html — in some cases, by making them feel more desirable, and in other cases, by dimming their libido. Some have said they feel more confident and are able to exercise and move around more easily.
